OUR STORY

The entrance to the Meritt Bois D'Arc Buffalo Ranch is a winding lamp-lined lane overlooking pastures of seasonal wildflowers and Grand Bois D’Arc trees to a “Home Where the Buffalo Roam.” Join us and experience over 100 acres of natural prairies and lakes which end up at our beautifully landscaped hotel, event and conference center. Enter the event center through our gardens with a beautiful gazebo that is surrounded by trees, flowers, and pond with a waterfall and fountain.

Meritt Bois D'Arc Buffalo Ranch was at one time campgrounds to the Comanche Indians and is named after the versatile and durable Bois D'Arc trees. While some sparse trees inhabit the region, the Bois D'Arc trees, also known as the Osage Orange or Hedge Apple trees, populate most of the area. These trees are well-known for their usefulness to the Comanche as sturdy wood for bows, fences, and windbreakers. The wood itself is nearly indestructible as it can withstand an immense amount of pressure (9800 lbs. per square inch) as well as termites and rot. The Bois D'Arc trees prove interesting and beautiful to our visitors for recreational and educational purposes.

At one point, buffalo roamed the fields freely. The Meritt Bois D'Arc Buffalo Ranch supports the natural habitat of the Buffalo, bringing them back to roam. When visiting the ranch, you can experience the Buffalo in their natural habitat as well as behold the impressive working Texas ranch.
